TUORO
The shops inTuoro, also supermarkt A&O are open on saturday till 20 clock and in summertime even on sunday morning
TIPS In Piazza in Tuoro are nice bars. I ususally go to Mocafe, they have also a wonderful pizza and some times very nice and good aperitifs in the afternoon. Bread I buy at the grocery store – (Arcangela Checconi) on the way to the Piazza. She has also good cheeses. (I like the cheese Pian di Marte, which is produced just on a hill near to Tuoro).
The butcher has very good meat, an excellent
porchetta, the best ham and you can also order a Pollo arrosto / ready baked chicken (also bio/ruspante) or a roast-meat cooked and pick it up before eating at home.
Excellent also the little fish shop (only opened Tuesday, Thursday and Friday), highly recommended her already prepared fish fillets (then fry only in pan or oven), the polpettine di alici, anchovis- fish- balls, or the wonderful big shrimps. (Piazza Guglielmo Marconi) on the way to the piazza. On the way to the piazza there is also a new shop for handmade pasta, she has also pizza for take away. A good supermarket is A & O. There is also a good selection of wines, often on sale, and they have a little part with bio-meat. A & O is located in via Porto 84. Do the street to the village, at the intersaction with restaurant / bar da Silvano take the left hand road and at the end of this street, A&O is on the right. The other Supermarkt is Conad.
Fruit and vegetable market is in Tuoro on Friday. Tuesday in Terontola, Wednesday in Castiglione del Lago. You can find fruit at vegetables from farmers around at Birelli, take the street from A& O, after ca 1 km there it goes on the left to Vernazzano, you take the street and after more or less 200 meters, to the right.
LAKE BEACH: Down to Tuoro, direction highway, before the highway on the left, go straight under the
bridge and to the parking of the sand- beach. RESTAURANTS:
The tipical italian osteria for families ist „il Vecchio Mulino“, the have tipical food and Pizza. It is in via Firenze 6, and has good prices.
Casa di Francesca: My favourite: a wonderful restaurant is the "Casa di Francesca" in Ferretto, Frazione Piana: there you can dine deliciously typical Umbrian cuisine, sit nicely, inside or outside, Closed Mon, at noon only Sat and Sun;
Excellent is the fish- restaurant Da Massimo, near San Feliciano, Via dei Romani, 16, Magione PG. They have very good sea-food-plates.
In Cortona I reccomend highly Trattoria Dardano, Via Dardano 24: Pappardelle al cinghiale, pasta with wild boar stew, or the tagliatelle ai porcini, pasta with mushroom sauce are delicious - and the prices are very reasonable in the otherwise rather expensive
Cortona. And in Via Dardano 29 is the shop with wonderful fresh pasta Bottega della Pasta fresca, which also have ready ragout. Very good is also the „Osteria del Teatro“, in Cortona, Via Giuseppe Maffei, 2.
For the trips You find the guide of the slow food- Restaurants in the house, they have good adresses.
SHOPPING / FASHION At Valdichiana Outlet Village you can find good brands for children, women and men, reductions to 30 per cent all the year and in August even 50% or more. On the superstrada exit at Valdichiana and follow directions tot he Outlet. (address: Foiano della Chiana (AR), Via Enzo Ferrari 5).
TRIPS:
With the Vespa around the lake? And at the same time high in the beautiful places Panicale, Castiglione del Lago and to Cortona. Vespa rental in Tuoro at Piaggio- Center, Viale Flaminio 59, (also mountain bikes).
30 minutes: Perugia, the beautiful medieval town. As it is difficult to find a parking space in the city: From the Superstrada, take the exit for Perugia-Madonna- Alta, via SS75 direction "Stadio" to Porta Nova car park: From there take the Minimetro ).
20 minutes: Cortona: Once again, leave the car down at
the parking lots of the city walls and go up. In addition to the Etruscan Museum, the small Diocesan Museum is attractive, with paintings
by Signorelli, Beato Angelico, (Piazza Duomo 1, Mo closed). Also nice is the walk to the Convento delle Celle: St. Francis preached in Cortona in 1211, and a nobleman offered him his house (then one of the first Franciscan monasteries) and the Etruscan Museum there.
Isola Polvese. It belongs to the municipality of Castiglione del Lago and is the largest and best maintained of the three islands of Lake Trasimeno. There are interesting testimonies of the history, such as the Chiesa di San Secondo, Olivetano Monastery, Chiesa San Giuliano, and a recently restored Castello from the fourteenth century. The ferry departs from Tuoro or closer from San Feliciano. But also Isola
Maggiore just in front of Tuoro is beautiful to go around. Ferry departs at the beach of Tuoro.
50 minutes: Assisi: The frescoes of San Francesco
are absolutely worth seeing in the lower church and the upper church. (The names Cimabue and Giotto are sufficient).
45 minutes: Montefalco: A wonderful small medieval town with many winegrowers (Sagrantino) and a valuable frescoes cycle of St. Francis's Benozzo di Gozzoli in the museum chapel San Francesco.
Bevagna: This small beautiful town with medieval corners and ancient Roman ruins south of Perugia can be
combined with a visit to Montefalco.
40 minutes: Chiusi: Unfortunately the Etruscan tombs are only irregularly opened, the most famous is the Tomba delle Scimmie, the tomb of the monkeys usually only Tue, Thu and Sat in the afternoon for max 25 persons, therefore reserve.
60 minutes: Gubbio: Some say the most beautiful mediaeval town of Umbria, but by car about a little bit more than an hour because of the curves.
60 minutes: Orvieto: Here, too, the car is left at the parking and you can take the cable car up. Orvieto has not only a beautiful cathedral,
is also considered a ceramic town.
60 minutes: Deruta: But THE ceramic town of Umbria is Deruta, famous worldwide for its colorful plates ....
45 minutes: A real insider tip:
Here the famous architect Tomaso Buzzi of the rich Scarzuola in
Montegabbione Italian citizens of the 20th century built an ideal town around an old Franciscan monastery.
60 minutes: Arezzo: I love the frescoes of Piero della Francesca "The Legend of the True Cross" in the Basilica of San Francesco.
a bit more than 60 minutes: A real jewel: from Piero della Francesca, you will find the rather unique work of a pregnant Madonna in Monterchi (about one hour drive): at the Monterchi Museum:
60 minutes: For me, Siena is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and famous enough, so I do not describe it here. Also in Siena leave car down at the parking lot and take a bus.
Florence is a good place to go by train, because the
train station is in the center of the city. The train departs from Terontola every two hours.
And ROME can also be reached by train in about two hours. The train station is relatively central, as there is good time for a walk from the Colosseum over the Forum, (with Metro from the train station to Colosseum) or the Vatican / Sistine Chapel (metro to Ottaviano).
If you want to go to Rome, just tell me and I can give you some tips for One day in Rome, with Colosseum, Forum, St. Peter and center (also with the bus or metro connections).
