The second largest lake in Sweden and the fifth largest in Europe, Lake Vättern is a slender body of fresh water that lies in south central Sweden. Whilst nearby Lake Vanern is better known, Lake Vättern charms visitors with its secrets, timeless folklore and wildlife. While some believe the name Vättern comes from 'vatten', the Swedish word for water, others believe it stems from an archaic word which refers to forest or lake spirits.
Cultural activities at Lake Vättern
Among Swedes, Lake Vättern is best known for the iconic monster that supposedly lies in wait beneath its still waters. While proof of it may not exist, the legend does undeniably make room for a little excitement. Cyclists should watch out for the popular annual recreational cycling race, the Vätternrundan, which attracts more than 20,000 participants who arrive to try their luck at completing the 300 km trip around the lake. The lake is surrounded by welcoming towns and villages such as Vadstena, Hjo, Askerskund and Karlsborg all of which offer cosy holiday rentals, holiday apartments and holiday homes you can rent. As the sun goes down, the waters take on surreal hues and it is possible to climb some of the cliffs which offer superb views of the lake.
