show more Beach is in two parts, north and south. This is a popular beach which is easily accessed and has good surfing conditions. The south beach is the rockier of the two beaches. An EEC Blue Flag Beach, it has lifeguards on duty in beach season. Madalena itself is packed with great restaurants and bars/esplanades. Several family friendly beaches are located within an easy walk of our beach house and offer fantastic water sports facilities.
Gaia offers about 18 km along the Atlantic coast (between Canidelo and Espinho) wooden walkway over the sand dunes to the beach, pedestrian walkways and bike paths; from where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean 6 km of pedestrian walkways and bike paths for stroll along the pretty Douro riverfront passing bobbing boats and shady streets, reaching Port WineCellars and Cais de Gaia.
This means that from your Holiday Apartment wherever you go, be it bike, walk you will enjoy lovely coastal ambiance (2 bicycles for adults and a child's bicycle is free of charge).

Vila Nova de Gaia
Oporto and Vila Nova de Gaia are historically connected. UNESCO recognized the historical connection that has always existed between the two banks of the Douro, and named the Convent of the Serra do Pilar in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia. Port wine is its greatest asset and emblem, snug in the basement of the historic center, where it acquires a new taste, quality and long life.

Picturesque fishing village of Afurada known for its fishing traditions and the feast in honor of St. Peter celebrated every year on the first weekend of July.
Aguda is known for its artisanal fisheries based on methods passed from generation to generation. It’s where the “Aguda Littoral Station - ELA" w/Aquarium and Fisheries Museum is installed.
Religious Heritage:
Capela do Senhor da Pedra (Lord of the Stone church) - on the beach at Miramar - is located by the sea and is based on a rock.
Monastery of Serra do Pilar, Convent of Corpus Christi, Church of Santa Marinha, Church of Bom Jesus and the Monastery of Grijó (Pedroso).
Nature:
The Aguda Dunes Park is a Nature Reserve approx. 3 hectares in area for the Protection of Dunes and their Fauna and Flora.
Ornithological Refuge (The Nature Reserve of the River Douro Estuary) -Refuge for the protection of birds and the land. S. Paio Bay, in the margin Vila Nova Gaia, close of the mouth of the Douro River is chosen as a special place for bird-watchers and nature photographers.
Gaia Biological Park - extensive 35 hectares, we can see woodland, farms with their typical rural houses, granaries and barns.
Castle Botanical Park, Crestuma - In this Park, situated near the River Douro, the plants (Mediterranean vegetation) are a very interesting subject for the visitors. This is also an interesting place for Archaeological studies. Researchers have recently found evidence of Roman occupation.
