The name Gällnö comes from the word “shrill”. Long ago Gällnö consisted of a number of islands, islets and reefs. When the wind blew vigorously it made the sea roar around the island, hence the name. Gällnö was inhabited as early as the Middle Ages. They lived by farming and fishing. Throughout the years Both Danes and Russians have ravaged and plundered the island. A well preserved stoneoven reminiscent of that time. At Torsviken are traces of the ice sheet in the form of a pothole that was turned out by the ice over 10,000 years ago.
