The north-eastern region of Lorraine wasn't always part of France and once belonged to the Middle Empire until it was bequeathed to Charlemagne's grandson, Lothair, gaining it the name Lotharingia. Today it is the only French region to border three countries, namely Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany.
