This is how holiday rental owners described Gignod
At about 8km from Aosta, following the Gran San Bernardo route 27, you will come to Gignod, the first town in the Montana Community of Grand Gombin, located in a magnificent, sunny spot on the right bank of the Buthier river, at an altitude of 988 metres.
The 55 hamlets ...
show more that make up the municipality are dotted around the foot of the Punta Chaligne.
Some of its more significant monuments include the stumpy square tower dating to around the XI century and the parish church of Sant‘Ilario, from the XV century with its solid bell tower and double lancet opening. Inside the church is a particularly significant baroque main altar; the interesting cycle of frescoes from the end of the XV century are also of some worth and possibly represent one of the most important expressions of Aosta painting at that time.
The “Fête du Teteun” is held on the second last Sunday in August in Gignod and is a gastronomic event where you can taste an unusual local dish: cattle udder cleverly prepared and served up in slices is a delicious cured meat that is not readily available for sale.
Gignod is the capital in Valle d‘Aosta of the “Pétanque” , a variation on the game of boules typically played in French countries.
In Arsanières you will find an excellent 9 hole golf course, on a natural slope where golf lovers can practice their sport in a particularly scenic spot.
Gignod is located on the road of the ancient Via Francigena, a route that was recently upgraded, dedicated to excursionists in search of old paths taken firstly by the Salassi, then the Romans followed by pilgrims in Medieval times heading to Rome.
In winter and springtime, those who enjoy Alpine skiing can go on excursions from Buthier (1370 m) to Punta Chaligne (2608 m), considered one of the classic destinations of this sport.
For mountain-bike lovers, as well as the various interstate roads, there is also a pleasant route running alongside the forests at the start of the hamlets.
The excursions to Punta Chaligne, Cresta Tardiva (2380 m) and the ascent up Mont Fallère (3061 m), are scenic and enjoyable, as are the numerous walks that can be taken along the network of marked paths.
